Four MIT kids and the fastest revenue curve in software history

Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, Arvid Lunnemark, and Aman Sanger graduated from MIT in 2022 and started building immediately. Their path to Cursor:

Musk is offering $60 billion for the company OpenAI discovered first. Seven and a half times the Windsurf price. Six days before jury selection in Musk v. Altman.

What real conviction looks like: Thrive Capital

Most investors got one shot at Cursor. Thrive took three.

• Series B at $2.6B valuation. Led the round.

• Series C at $9.9B valuation. Led again.

• Series D at $29.3B valuation. Co-led.

Three consecutive rounds. Increasing check sizes. Increasing conviction across 24 months.

If the SpaceX deal closes at $60 billion:

• The Series B position is approaching a 19.3x MOIC

• The Series C position is at roughly 5.6x

• The Series D, closed six months ago, is already a clean 2x

• Blended across all three rounds: 3.6x MOIC on ~$826 million invested

• Total gains: over $2 billion

This is what differentiated investing looks like in practice. A fund that built its position across three years, increased it at each step, and is now sitting on one of the defining venture outcomes of the AI era.

The interesting question is what this means for Thrive’s new $10 billion fund. Deploying that scale in venture is genuinely hard. Cursor is the proof that concentrated conviction can still produce extraordinary returns. Whether the math works at $10 billion is a separate question entirely.

The SpaceX deal: what it actually is

The April 21 announcement is a call option, not a closed acquisition.

Here is the structure:

• SpaceX has the right to acquire Cursor for $60 billion later in 2026

• If SpaceX walks away, it pays Cursor $10 billion for joint work on Composer

• Cursor granted SpaceX 12 months of acquisition exclusivity

Michael Truell’s response on X was deliberate in its understatement:

“Excited to partner with the SpaceX team to scale up Composer. A meaningful step on our path to build the best place to code with AI.”

Cursor’s official blog post made no mention of the acquisition option or the $10 billion alternative. It framed the deal purely as a compute partnership. That editorial choice signals something about how seriously they are taking the independence narrative.

The timing is pointed. Jury selection in Musk v. Altman begins April 27. Six days after the announcement. Musk is locking up the asset OpenAI found first, at 20x the price of OpenAI’s comparable acquisition, in the same week he takes Altman to trial.

Why this deal makes sense for both sides

For SpaceX:

SpaceX filed confidentially for IPO on April 1, targeting roughly $1.75 trillion. The problem: xAI lost $6.4 billion in 2025. Cursor brings $2B in real ARR and 70% of the Fortune 1000 into the IPO story. Commercial ballast for a vehicle built around more speculative hardware bets.

xAI also publicly admitted Grok “is currently behind in coding” and was “not built right first time around.” In March 2026, xAI had already hired two senior Cursor product-engineering leads, both reporting directly to Musk. The April announcement was visible from miles away.

For Cursor:

The Windsurf saga showed the existential risk of frontier-lab model dependence. When OpenAI tried to acquire Windsurf, Anthropic cut off Claude API access immediately. Cursor’s core models are Claude, GPT, and Gemini, all supplied by companies now competing with Cursor directly via Claude Code, Codex, and Jules.

The SpaceX option gives Cursor three things:

• A $10 billion floor even if the deal breaks

• Guaranteed compute for Composer training at a scale unavailable from frontier labs

• Leverage against the API cutoff risk that destroyed Windsurf’s independence

Cursor is also running a $2 billion round at $50 billion pre-money in parallel. You do that when you have options, not when you have already decided.

The Windsurf saga: why this matters

April 2025: OpenAI agrees to acquire Windsurf for $3 billion.

During exclusivity: A Microsoft IP dispute stalls the deal. Anthropic cuts off Claude API access.

July 11, 2025: The exclusivity expires.

Within hours: Google announces a $2.4 billion reverse-acquihire of the Windsurf founders into DeepMind.

Three days later: Cognition acquires the remaining Windsurf company, IP, brand, $82M ARR, and 350 enterprise customers, for roughly $250 million.

The whole episode proved one thing: any coding tool dependent on frontier-lab APIs is permanently exposed to the founders of those labs using API access as a weapon. Cursor saw it clearly. Composer, their proprietary inference model, was the strategic response.

The FTX ghost

The Alameda Research investment came through Clifton Bay Investments LLC, the FTX Group’s for-profit venture arm. A $200,000 check in April 2022. Roughly 5% of the company at a ~$4 million post-money valuation.

When FTX collapsed in November 2022, this became an asset of the bankruptcy estate under John Ray.

In April 2023, Ray sold it for $200,000. Cost basis.

The buyer has never been publicly identified.

The counterfactual at each subsequent valuation:

• ~$450 million at the May 2025 $9 billion valuation

• ~$1.47 billion at the November 2025 Series D

• ~$3 billion at SpaceX’s $60 billion option price

These are undiluted estimates. Real dilution would reduce them materially.

The numbers circulating on X after the SpaceX announcement are almost impossible to reconcile with the story the world told about FTX:

“So you’re telling me SBF did Anthropic, Cursor, Solana and Robinhood? His NAV would’ve been about $52-86 billion today. 9.8-16.2x TVPI.” @ JasonrShuman

The Anthropic position sits alongside Cursor as the defining monument to how fast the AI era outran the bankruptcy timeline. Ray sold the Anthropic stake for approximately $1.3 billion across 2024. At Anthropic’s February 2026 valuation of $380 billion, that position would be worth roughly $30 billion today.

Bankman-Fried has made this argument from prison. The math does not vindicate him. But it does complicate the story in ways that are genuinely uncomfortable to sit with.

Anysphere has never publicly acknowledged the Alameda backing in any press release, funding announcement, or blog post.

What happens next

Two scenarios. One tells the rest of the AI market something significant.

If SpaceX exercises at $60 billion:

• Cursor becomes Musk infrastructure

• Anthropic and OpenAI accelerate their own IDE plays

• Fortune 500 companies with data sovereignty concerns start re-evaluating

• The Musk empire consolidation arc completes: X into xAI, xAI into SpaceX, Cursor into SpaceX, then IPO

If the option lapses:

• Cursor pockets $10 billion in compute resources

• Closes its $50 billion independent round

• Becomes a serious IPO candidate, potentially the first standalone AI-native software company to reach public markets at scale

The company’s behavior right now reads like the second scenario. A $2 billion parallel fundraising process is not how you act when you have already decided to sell.

The FTX angle gives this story its emotional core. A $200,000 check from a company synonymous with fraud bought what would have been one of the most valuable venture positions of the decade. The estate sold it at cost to move fast. Three years later, Elon Musk is offering $60 billion for the same company, six days before taking Sam Altman to trial.

The bill for that haste, if SpaceX exercises, reads at roughly $3 billion undiluted.

It’s a shared standard for what high performing content actually looks like, shaped long before any of this system existed. They’ve worked in environments where output is judged by distribution, retention and conversion, not whether something “sounds good.”

That shows up immediately in how the system is designed. It doesn’t chase creativity in the abstract. It enforces patterns that already work.

Three Disciplines, One System

Individually, each of them brings a different layer of that discipline. Mitchell operates like a systems builder, translating production logic into something structured enough to run inside a multi agent environment.

Matt’s path from Cornell into building and scaling performance driven content that generated millions in revenue anchors the system in what actually converts, not just what gets attention. 2. Why single prompt AI doesn’t work well for real tasks

Most people still use AI for creative work in the simplest possible way. They open a model, type a prompt, get a draft, make a few edits and move on.

One Prompt, Too Many Jobs

For lightweight tasks, that can be enough. But when performance matters, when a script has to hold attention, carry a sales argument and stand up to real audience scrutiny, that workflow breaks down quickly. It asks one system to do too many jobs at once and it removes the checks that serious creative work depends on. This is especially dangerous right now, as recent reports of Claude’s fluctuating performance and compute crunches prove that you cannot simply trust a model’s baseline intelligence on any given day.

That is the problem Mitchell is pointing at.

A single prompt collapses research, ideation, drafting, editing and judgment into one blurred step. The model is expected to decide what to study, which patterns matter, how to structure the argument, where the hook should land, what to cut and whether the result is strong enough to publish. In effect, it is generating and evaluating its own work at the same time.

That is not how strong creative organizations operate and for good reason.

Structure Is the Problem, Not the Model

In any disciplined content team, those functions are separated. Research identifies what is already working in the market. Writing turns those inputs into a draft. Editing sharpens structure and pacing. Review checks whether the piece clears the actual standard.

These roles exist because each one demands a different kind of judgment. When they get compressed into a single AI interaction, the output often feels smooth but generic.

It may read fluently. It may even look competent on first pass.

But it carries the familiar weaknesses of undifferentiated AI content: weak hooks, recycled framing, vague claims, borrowed rhythm and no real internal resistance.

That is why so much AI content feels finished without feeling convincing.

The issue is structure, not vocabulary. What Shown Media understood early is that mediocre output usually traces back to a broken process long before it shows up in the writing. Once you see that, the goal changes. The task is no longer to get a better answer from one agent but to stop asking one agent to do everything.

3. Inside the Machine: How the System Actually Works

Quality Is Enforced, Not Expected

Output clears the threshold only when the system is built to demand it. It assumes something strict: the model will give okay but average results unless it’s pushed to do better. Good quality doesn’t just happen on its own it has to be forced. In this setup, reliability is built into the system, not left to chance.

That strict approach is what turns it from a simple AI content setup into something more like a full production system. Each layer in the system carries a specific responsibility and each one exists precisely because removing it causes something to break.

Every Layer Earns Its Place

The orchestrator manages the entire process, making sure everything happens in the right order and only with approval.

The research phase sets the ceiling, it defines what quality looks like before a single word of output is written. Without it, the system has no reference point and the work becomes generic by default. The specialized agents execute within clearly defined constraints, keeping each role focused and preventing the kind of scope creep that dilutes output.

The managers evaluate what the agents produce, applying judgment at the layer where judgment is most needed. And the final gate, the weapons check enforces the standard that everything else was built to reach. Without it, weak drafts slip through dressed as finished work.

Strip away any one of these layers and the degradation is immediate and specific.

No research means no ceiling.

Without specialization, roles blur and accountability breaks down. Without evaluation, weak drafts move forward unchecked. Without a final gate, the system has a process but no standard, just motion without integrity.

4. What the Results Actually Mean

The headline numbers are easy to repeat. Tens of millions of views, eight figure revenue impact, consistent performance across launches.

The final quality gate depends on recognizing when something feels derivative, underpowered, or structurally weak. This aligns perfectly with Wharton’s research on the ‘Jagged Frontier’ of AI, which found that models fail without deep human domain expertise guiding them. None of that comes from the model. It comes from prior experience with content that has already performed in the real world.

The Question Most Builders Get Wrong

In other words, the model isn’t what makes the work good. It’s just what keeps the standard from slipping.

Most people building with these tools are asking the wrong question. They’re swapping models, tweaking prompts, chasing better outputs as if the problem is the tool. It usually isn’t.

The problem is that nobody wrote down what “good” actually looks like.

If your standard lives in your head, vague, intuitive, inconsistent, no system will reliably hit it. You’ll get something that feels close. Sometimes great. Often just fine.

And you won’t know why.

What this system forces you to do is different. Before you touch any of it, you have to define your own bar. What makes a hook work? What kills a script in the first ten seconds? The model is fine. What you build around it is not.

Stanford’s CS230 is the most practically dense AI engineering session I have found. Two hours. Zero filler. It covers what most teams spend six months learning through painful production incidents.

I watched every minute so you do not have to.

Here are the ten rules that matter.

1. BCG Paid Harvard to Run the Study. The Untrained AI Group Performed Worse Than No AI at All.

Prompt training is not a perk. It is the line between AI helping you and AI making you worse.

“There is a frontier within which AI is absolutely helping and one where they call out this behavior of falling asleep at the wheel, where people relied on AI on a task that was beyond the frontier.”

Harvard, UPenn, and Wharton split BCG consultants into three groups: no AI, AI with no training, AI with prompt training.

The trained group outperformed on nearly every task. The untrained AI group performed worse than the people using nothing.

They stopped thinking. The model filled the gap. Badly.

Two patterns separated the people who got it right:

It overfit to how humans stall. It lost the ability to follow instructions entirely.

Fine-tuning belongs in three narrow cases:

1️⃣ Repeated high-precision legal or scientific outputs

2️⃣ Consistent domain-language failures with general models

3️⃣ Tasks where latency and cost justify the overhead

Most teams fine-tune because it signals effort. It is usually just slower. Now it is obsolete before it ships.

Everything Claude has shipped in 2026 includes capabilities that make most fine-tuning use cases irrelevant. Read that before deciding to fine-tune anything.

4. Every Knowledge Product Has a Hallucination Problem. One Architecture Solves It.

The fix is not a bigger context window. That is a latency problem with no sourcing.

“RAG integrates with external knowledge sources, databases, documents, APIs. It ensures that answers are more accurate, up to date, and grounded.”

Four steps:

1️⃣ Embed your documents and store them in a vector database

2️⃣ Embed the query the same way and pull the nearest documents

4️⃣ Add one rule: if the answer is not in these documents, say so

That rule is what makes it a product.

5. Vanilla RAG Fails Deep in Long Documents. Two Techniques Fix It. Almost Nobody Uses Either.

Retrieving the right file is not the same as finding the right paragraph inside it.

“What people have figured out is a bunch of techniques to improve RAGs. Chunking is a great technique that is very popular.”

Vanilla RAG on large documents is too coarse. You retrieve the right file and land on the wrong page.

Two fixes exist.

1. Chunking with hierarchical vectors: Embed at both document and chapter level. Now you cite the page and section, not just the file name.

2. HyDE: A user question does not look like a clinical document linguistically. Vector distance is high. Retrieval misses. Fix: generate a hallucinated answer from the query and embed that instead. A fake answer looks far more like the real document than the question ever did.

Try this: Run your RAG on five deep-document queries. Below 70% accuracy, add chunking. Still below, test HyDE.

This is the same reliability architecture covered in Stop Blaming the Model. Fix the Architecture. Most agent stacks fail silently. RAG quality is usually the first place to look.

6. Every Team Is Building “Agents.” Most Are Building the Wrong Thing.

The definition you use determines how you design, debug, and measure everything.

“Calling everything an agent doesn’t do it justice. In practice, it’s a bunch of prompts with tools, with additional resources, API calls that ultimately are put in a workflow.”

RAG returns: “Refunds are available within 30 days.”

An agentic workflow asks for the order number, queries the database, confirms eligibility, and tells the user when the money lands.

Problem solved. Not just answered.

Three autonomy levels exist:

1. Hard-coded steps: You define the sequence.

2. Hard-coded tools: The agent picks the order.

3. Fully autonomous: The agent decides everything.

Your autonomy level determines how much you can trust the output. Choose it before you write a single line of code.

Karpathy let an AI agent tune his code for two days and it found 20 things he missed. The architecture behind why that worked — and why most agents fail at that task — is exactly what autonomy level selection determines.
